| These are the hardiest
of the lavenders, tolerating temperatures well below freezing in the right
soil conditions. They have traditionally produced the finest oil for the
perfume industry and because of their exceptionally good drying qualities,
the flowers can be used in lavender bags, room fresheners and dried flower
arrangements.
|
Tall, sturdy plants, these lavenders
tend to flower a little later than the angustifolias, and although they
also produce oil in large quantities, the quality is not as fine. They
do however make excellent hedging plants. We will be selling 'Fragrant
Memories' and 'Grosso'. |
Recently risen in popularity, these lavenders,
originating in places as far apart as the Mediterranean and Australia,
have adapted well but are less hardy than the angustifolias. Their longer
flowering period makes them an attractive addition to the pots on the
patio. Transfer them to a conservatory or greenhouse, and they will continue
to flower if deadheaded regularly. |
Some of the most beautiful
lavenders are also the least able to survive winter chill. The reward
for keeping them warm and dry through the cold months is a wealth of flowers
all year round. Spiralling blue tridents and highly scented lacy foliage
characterise these plants, mostly upright in habit. |
